Why ShutdownKit exists
Governments in the US, UK and across Europe now ask households to keep a few days of supplies for power, water, phone and payment outages. The lists are free and good. Most people still don't do it: it takes time, it's hard to know what's missing, and a lot of prep content online is built on fear.
We do the boring part. We take the free public list, shop it, pack it small enough for an apartment, date everything, and tell you plainly what a box can't cover.
How we work
- Calm, not scary. No countdowns, no "when, not if", no disaster pictures.
- Sourced. Every item maps to a public checklist line, and we link the source.
- Honest about limits. No kit makes you "survive anything". We tell you what to add yourself.
- Fair prices. We never raise prices while an emergency declaration covers your state.
- Private. Our quiz runs in your browser and sends nothing.
Independent
We're not affiliated with, endorsed or approved by FEMA, Ready.gov, the UK Cabinet Office, the American Red Cross or any government. The free lists are at ready.gov/kit and beready.campaign.gov.uk.
